1. Purpose
This summary is provided only as a guide to the BCC-Competition-Rule, and does not substitute for the Rules. Consult the official Rules when details or exact wording must be considered.
2. Number of entries
For print, each member may enter at most two prints per category (six prints total). For electronic image, each member may enter up to six images in total: a maximum of three Nature images and a maximum of three Open images.
3. Size, mounting, and labeling [prints only]
Photographic prints, including mount, may not exceed 16 x 20 inches.
The front of the mount may only contain the title of the print, except for a required caption in the Photojournalism category. The reverse must carry at least the title, the category in which the print is entered, and the print maker's full name.
4. Authorship
The photograph and all elements of the image must have been conceived and created by the member, whether the medium is film or digital.
5. Image sources
Entries must be captured as photographs on photographic emulsion or acquired digitally.
6. Manipulation
If there is an Open or General category, there are no limitations for subject matter or method of producing the image except general requirements that images are photographically produced, and all elements of the image are the work of the maker. Other categories may have restrictions.
7. Print age restriction
The elapsed time between competition date and print date (not the date the image was recorded) may not exceed two years.
8. Definitions, color and monochrome
A color print contains more than one color. A monochrome print is defined as having no more than two colors: monochrome plus one other color.
9. Category: photojournalism
Photojournalism entries shall consist of pictures with informative content and emotional impact, including human interest, documentary and spot news. For judging purposes, journalistic value of the photograph is weighed more heavily than pictorial quality. Photographs must accurately depict the subject matter, which should be spontaneous and not staged. Image manipulation techniques are limited to those achievable with dark room processing or the assistance of filters, and digital or darkroom manipulation should be minimized. Photojournalism prints must include (on the front) text that would lead a caption under the photo in a publication.
10. Category: portrait
Portraits submitted for the Latimer Portrait Category shall be pictorial representations of a person(s). The intent of Portraits as defined for this Category is to convey facial expressions and personalities. Pictures of multiple persons may be considered as a portrait. There is no restriction regarding the extent of a person depicted (ranging from full-length to face only), although the primary impact of the image must be attributable to facial features. In general, the subject(s) will not be engaged in an activity; the purpose of the image must clearly be to depict the subject(s) rather the subject(s) activities. The portrait style may be a staged studio-type shot (as for inclusion in a model’s portfolio) or an image primarily meant to communicate the subject’s personality. The subject must be the focus of the image rather than an element of the image.
Image manipulation techniques are limited to those achievable with dark room processing or the assistance of filters.
11. Category: nature
All branches of natural history may be depicted, except anthropology and archeology. The image must be sufficiently accurate and clearly presented so that a well informed person will be able to identify the subject material. The story telling value of a photograph must be weighed more than the pictorial quality. Human elements shall not be present, except on the rare occasion where those human elements enhance the nature story. In general, living creatures should be shown in their natural or adopted habitat. However, photographs of zoo or game farm animals are eligible if the image appears to be sited in a natural or adopted habitat.
Digital or darkroom manipulation should be minimal. Moderate sharpening and adjustment of contrast are allowed, but multiple exposures are prohibited. Cloning/airbrushing tools may only be used to remove processing artifacts (such as dust), and not to add or subtract features that were not captured by the camera.
12. Category: creative
The Creative category includes images that have been obviously manipulated to present “altered reality” (i.e., obvious distortion of color or shape; use of electronic filters to significantly transform the original image for artistic effect).
13. Electronic Images
The Open and Nature categories for Electronic Images have the same rules provided above for Prints. Images must not exceed 1.7 Mb file size, must have pixel dimensions not exceeding 1024 horizontal and 768 vertical, must be .jpeg files, and should be in an sRGB embedded color space. File names must conform to this format: category_image name_maker name_competition date.jpg.
