BCC Latimer Print Group
The Group is named in honor of Club benefactor Horace Latimer (1860-1931) (see “Who was Horace A. Latimer?”), who provided a bequest to the Club in 1931. An accomplished photographer and printmaker, Mr. Latimer was a world traveler and advanced amateur photographer. The Club has a number of his original prints in its archives.
The Print Group helps photographers at all skill levels improve their craft.
- Through critique: Club members may display their printed photographs for evaluation and feedback from their peers and professional photographers. Members whose works have won in BCC competition may advance to Inter-Club competitions.
- By example: Members view images produced by professional photographers, hear professionals describe their philosophies and approaches to creating photographic images and prints, and have the opportunity to engage featured speakers in discussion.
The Print Group sponsors nine monthly competitions during the Club Year from September through May. General subject Color categories are held each session at two levels, beginning and experienced, and several other categories such as Travel, Portrait, Monochrome, Photojournalism, and Nature are regularly included. Special categories such as “Red,” “Water,” and “Creative” are presented every three months.. Each category has a different set of rules and subject guidelines. There is no distinction between film and digital image capture, between prints produced by a darkroom process or inkjet printing, or between prints produced commercially or by the entrant.
A typical evening for the Print Group starts with an informal social period, during which members enter as many as two images per category per session and view the entries. Awards are given based on a ballot of members and a professional print judge. After members vote for their favorite entries, each print is critiqued by the judge. Our judges have many styles, interests, and backgrounds, offering members the opportunity to have their work evaluated from a range of perspectives over the course of the year. Most judges complete the evening with a presentation of their work and discussion. Cumulative point totals determine Annual Awards that are presented at the June Annual Meeting.
Winning prints in BCC competitions may be retained and submitted as part of Club entries to New England Camera Club Council Inter-Club Competitions In the past year, prints produced by BCC members were selected as “Image of the Year” by the NECCC at its Annual Meeting.
Please note: prints must be mounted or matted, maximum dimension 20x16.
