We’re happy to announce the formation of our online community at Flickr, the world’s largest photo sharing site. Akshat Gupta and Nancy Capaccio created the BCC Flickr site and are the BCC Flickr Administrators. BCC Flicker will provide a venue for members to post photos and engage each other, share photographs and ideas, and learn from each other. For example, it can be used to easily share images from field trips and Model Studio shoots, ask questions and offer advice, critique and help. Check it out, click the  Flickr logo on the right or go to:

http://www.flickr.com/groups/bostoncameraclub/

Any active BCC member can join the group. Please click on ‘read more’ for all the details.

FAQs: BCC FLICKR GROUP

Q: Why is this being created?
A: Setting up a BCC online community at Flickr provides a terrific medium for the members to engage with each other, share ideas/photographs, and learn from each other. It will be particularly helpful in sharing our work from field trips, Model Studios and Education workshops. This will complement the website’s Gallery which showcases each photographer’s best work.

Q: Is this a public or private group?
A: This is a private group in the sense that only members of BCC can add pictures to our Group Pool or contribute to the Discussion. Non-members can, however, look at our pictures and read our Discussion. They can also visit your personal photostream and see your pictures unless you restrict this, which is your choice. (See Download, below)

Q: How can I join the BCC group at Flickr?
A: If you already have a Flickr account, skip to Step 2.
If you don’t, start with Step 1.
Step 1: Go to www.flickr.com  and use your Yahoo login details to sign in. (If you don’t have a Yahoo login, it’ll ask you to create one. A nuisance, yes, but worthwhile.)
Step 2: Search (sub-menu=Groups) for “Boston Camera Club”   (use the “ “)
Step 3: Ask to be invited. You can expect a confirmation within 24 hours, provided you are a member in good standing (dues paid, thank you!).

Q: Are there rules?
A: What’s a club without rules? To be admitted you need agree to these:
1. Only open to members of the Boston Camera Club
2. Only Club members can upload photos and participate in the activities of this group.
3. The BCC welcomes pictures that you want to share with other members, or images that invite comment or a discussion. We rely on members to be selective in adding images to the Group Pool.
4. When adding photos, please tag them "Boston Camera Club."  (use the “ “)
5. BCC administrators may add tags to any photos to make them easier for Club members to find.
6. BCC administrators may, from time to time, refresh the Group Pool by removing old images (but they will remain in your photostream).
7. As this is an extension of the Boston Camera Club, let’s participate in the same spirit.

Q: What else should I do before I add pictures to the BCC Flickr group?
A: You need do nothing, but you may want to set up your preferences regarding Privacy & Permissions. (See Download, below)

Q: Will it be quick and easy to upload my pictures, or a hassle?
A: If you already have pictures in your photostream that you want to add to the BCC Group Pool, skip to Step 3.
If you don’t start with Step 1.
Step 1: You may want to make your image smaller before you send it to Flickr so that you can post more pictures per month. Save for Web is handy for this. (See also: How Many, below)
Step 2: On your Howdy page, simply click on UPLOAD and do what it says.
Step 3: Above any picture in your photostream, click on SEND TO GROUP. (If you belong to more than one group, select BCC.)
Step 4: If you haven’t tagged your picture, you may want to do that now. (See Tags, below)
If you want to upload a series of images (e.g. from a Model Studio or filed trip):     On the Group Pool page, click on ADD PHOTOS.
Choose which of your photos to display.
Select 6 at a time to add to the BCC Group Pool.
To learn other options, see: FAQ/Photos or visit www.flickr.com/photos/upload/

Q: Who can I contact if I need help?
A: Flickr has a very good help function http://www.flickr.com/help/
and an FAQ section http://www.flickr.com/help/faq/
With regards to any questions about the club activities on Flickr you can contact the BCC Flickr administrators: Akshat (Akey) Gupta at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it   or Nancy at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it
If you have questions you think others might also have, please post them on the Discussion portion of BCC/Flickr.

Q: How can I see all the pictures from a Model Studio or a field trip?
A: If it’s a recent event, the images will probably be those most recently loaded so they’ll be on the first page(s) of the Group Pool. Or simply check “BCC Tags in Use” and search on the event’s tag.

Q: Will I be able to post comments/questions about my images or someone else’s?
A: Yes. You can even post a “note” on a particular part of an image that you are referring to. (How cool is that?) If you have a question, you may want to ask it in the Discussion. You can include an image within your question. (Discussion threads appear on the BCC group page below the Group Pool, including how to include an image within a question/comment.) Note: Comments your pictures get in the Group Pool will also appear in your own photostream. You have the option of deleting them.

Q: Will others be able to download my photos?
A: If you want ANYONE to download your pictures, you need do nothing. If you want to LIMIT downloads:
Step 1:  Go to YOU/ YOUR ACCOUNT and click on the PRIVACY & PERMISSIONS tab.
Step 2: Choose who can download, share, print, or blog your work.
Note: In addition to your “default” setting which applies to all of your pictures, you can chose a different privacy setting for individual pictures.
For more details: http://www.flickr.com/help/photos/#87

Q: What about licensing my images?
A: Set your preferences at Privacy & Permissions on your Howdy page. (See Download, above)

Q: How many photos can I upload?
A: Up to 100MB* per month. You can see the most recent 200* photos. You may want to downsize your files before you load them (e.g., with Save for Web).

Q: Are there limits on file sizes or file types for uploads?
A: You can upload photos up to 10MB* in size. Flickr supports JPEGs, GIFS (not-animated) and PNGs. You can also upload TIFFS “and some other file types” but they will automatically be converted to and stored in JPEG format.  * All these limits are for a free Flickr account. For a “Pro” account, which costs $24.95/year, all the limits are higher.

Q: What is a tag?
A: Tags are labels for pictures that facilitate searching and sorting. If you’ve already added the image to the BCC Group Pool, here’s how you tag it:
Step 1: To the right of the image, click on ADD A TAG.
Step 2: Then either type in your tag OR click on CHOOSE FROM YOUR TAGS which will display your tags. Flic
Note: If using more than one word, you must put the phrase in “ “ to keep the words together. Flickr provides more guidelines at point of use.
Note: BCC Tags in Use is a topic in our Discussion. We encourage you to use them (along with other tags you like to use).

MORE FAQs (still have more questions? Maybe it’s one of these!)

Q: How can I remove a picture from the BCC Group Pool?
For single pictures:
Step 1: On the Group page, click on the x under the picture.
Step 2: Click OK to confirm you want to remove it from the BCC Group Pool but keep it in your own photostream.
For one or more pictures: (you’re doing some tidying up, thank you!)
Step 1: On the Group page, click on OPEN THIS GROUP IN ORGANIZR.
Step 2: Click on SHOW ONLY MY STUFF.
Step 3: Drag photos down to Findr and drop them. It will ask you to confirm. This will remove them from the Group Pool but keep them in your photostream.
CAUTION: If you have clicked on a thumbnail and now are looking at a page with just that photo, DO NOT click on DELETE unless you want to remove the image from your photostream. This cannot be undone (except by uploading the image again.)

Q: How do I see a larger version of a thumbnail in the Group Pool?
A: Click on any thumbnail and you’ll get a larger view. To the right you’ll see the BCC pool (next picture, previous picture). Click in either direction. NOTE that if you click on a member’s name, you’ll be taken to their photostream.

Q: If someone comments on my photo in my own photostream, will that comment appear in the BCC pool?
A: Yes, and vice versa. However, you can always delete comments, and block comments for all or single pictures.

Q: Why do I still get comments when I set it for No Comments?
A: If you send your photo to the BCC Group Pool, members can leave comments and add notes and tags to it despite your setting. Again, you can delete them.

It is my pleasure to announce the Boston Camera Club 2010 annual Model of the Year Competition will be held on June 5th Saturday evening in the ACAS Center, Woburn, Mass. We are looking for contestants to compete in our contest.

The models need not to be professional or experienced to enter the competition. Most of the past winners / contestants were not professional in the modeling field. You will be able to gain much rewarding experience and exposure from the stage appearance. It should be a fun evening networking with the local photographers, make up artists & models. The Boston Camera Club has been sponsoring the annual Model of the Year competition event for over twenty years. We have had incredible success with our contestants and winners in the past. Some went to join major Boston modeling agencies, travel in the world of modeling, act in the major local productions and mostly recently, one of our previous year contestants, Susie Castillo, competed and won the 2003 Miss Mass USA State & Miss USA National titles.

The contestants are invited to enter our modeling competition to compete for the following prizes, including cash, trophy, sash, tiara, free photo shoots, your own photo appearing in the 2011 New England Beauties Calendar. And if you are over 18 years old, invitation to try out for the New England Camera Club Conference model search for the Univ. of Mass / Amherst campus the weekend of July 16 – 18 to pose for hundreds of photographers, free hotel stay & meals plus $ 200. spending money.

Feel free to call 617 328-6218 or email me if you have any questions regarding the event.
