Open A: Tirtha 'The Curtain'
Camera Nikon D700, handheld.
ISO 200
Shutter speed 1/40 sec
Aperture f14
It was processed in Adobe Camera Raw and in Silver Efex Pro.
The photo was taken in a museum store in the ghost town of Bodie in
Eastern Sierra. The outside was very bright and the backlit curtain
was showing off its beautiful embroidered details. The Wheel at the
bottom left corner made me feel as if I was seeing through the eyes of
an expectant person waiting for a sailor to come home after a long
voyage.
Open B: Arlene Winkleman
The print was taken with my Canon Rebel FILM camera that has a Sigma DG 28-300mm lens. I was using Elite VS Slide film with an ASA of 100. The picture was hand-held - and I only had the Tiffen Haze 1 filter. NO post processing was done to the image. The slide film was sent to Kansas for developing and then I took the slide to Costco for printing.
This picture was taken at sunrise in Xie Pu, China - a small town about 1000 miles south of Shanghai. The nets you see are used to dry seaweed. When thinking about the picture I was looking for the design and pattern made by the nets - and consciously placed the fisherman with the nets acting as leading lines.
While in China I did shoot eight rolls of slide film in addition to the thousands of images with my
Canon PowerShot SC50HD
Abstract: beth Luchner 'Mushrooms
The picture was taken this December while on a trip in Sicily and visiting one of the many street markets. I was attracted to the mushroom's lines and curves and quickly snapped one picture as I walked by the stall. The image was shot in color using a Canon G15 point and shoot camera at f.28, 1/125 sec and ISO 125 (auto mode). When I reviewed the image, I immediately cropped the image to emphasize the image's lines and curves. I used Nik Silver Effects Pro to convert the image to black and white and used the program's tools to enhance contrast, structure and tone. In Photoshop, I used the levels and curves adjustment layers to create black and white points, used the clone stamp tool to fix some of the mushroom's broken lines and added a gradient mask. I then rotated the image for greatest impact.
Flight: Ron Abramov 'Dancing in the sky'
The image was taken at the Rhode Island Air Show. The two sky divers where connected together when they opened the parachute. Just before they got to the ground they have disconnected and the tie between them. This photo was taken at the exact moment that they are going in two different directions but there is still a hint of tie that just broke.
It was taken with a Nikon D90 with a Sigma 70-300mm (4.0-5.6) lens at f/4.2; 1/1600 sec.; and ISO 100.
The image is almost as taken with some Lightroom adjustment of exposure, contrast and cropping.
