Open A: Arthur Sharenow ‘Boat in Fog'
“Boat In Fog” was shot while on a ferry boat, crossing a small river from Hanoi to a neighboring island. I took photos constantly while crossing since everything was in fog, and I knew if I could find a colorful something coming through the fog it would be a good image. This was taken with my Nikon D300s, my usual travel lens (80-200mm) at a probable ISO of 800 and a probable aperture of 5.6 with speed in the 250th range. Those settings are just guesses. I take too many shots to ever note down the settings or be sure I recall them accurately.
Open B: Karen Marlene Larsen ‘Friday'
This image was shot on auto with an Olympus C750UZ camera - the exposure was 1/3 s, f/2.8, ISO 200. It was taken in available light with the camera resting on top of my water glass in lieu of a tripod. Conversion was done in Photoshop and though I don’t remember the exact path, for black and white conversions I generally go into channel mixer and change the values to 43/34/23. I then usually sharpen the image to some extent. To create a bit more drama I may also have boosted the contrast a tiny bit, but I’m not sure I needed to do that for this image.
The photo was taken at a restaurant called Paolo’s in Charlestown where I was having supper with a friend. When they arrived the two people depicted seemed to be pointedly not speaking with each other and exhibiting an intriguing cross between disdain and ennui. They seemed awfully lonely in their togetherness. I’m glad I took the shot when I did because the lighting that appealed to me quickly diminished, and the two got much friendlier with each other the more wine they drank. The happy demeanor wouldn’t have made near as good a shot.
Portrait: Yair Melamed ‘Bearded Man’
This image was shot with my Canon 40D, at 135 mm with a Canon 28-135 Zoom Lens: shutter speed 1/250, f/8, ISO 100. It was extensively edited in Lightroom - tightly cropped, the face was retouched and sharpened, and a gradual filter was used along with wide range of brushes for localized and regional adjustment.I was strolling in the middle of the day in Tel Aviv along Nachalat Binyamin Market. I saw this bearded artist standing quite a distance away – his smile and beard combined with his red fleece and dark hat caught my eye. I took few shots from a distance while he was engaged with potential buyers. I think this is a nice portrait, even though the light was not ideal and I did not have direct engagement with him. I think he has a quite universal look, although he looks more like a fisherman than an artist.
Creative: Martin Becker ‘Power Station Reflections’
The image was taken by focusing on the surface reflection of three power station chimneys in a flowing river in Hadera, Israel. The scene was very impressionistic and I particularly liked the spiral shapes resulting from the river's distortion of the chimneys' reflections. The photo was taken on the spur of the moment on a bright sunny day at 3:00pm, with a Nikon D300 and a 18 to 200mm zoom, shot at 38mm, f11, 1/125 sec and ISO 200. Post processing was done in Lightroom and included uptick of black slider, negative clarity, increased vibrance, noise reduction, image rotation (vertical flip) and a light post crop vignetting.
