Open A: Arthur Sharenow 'Fisherman'
This photo was taken in February 2013 on a trip to Myanmar. It was taken on Inle Lake, a large lake about the size of Winnepesauke. The lake is very shallow, usually no more than two or three feet deep, though it does get down to six foot depth in places. We were on and around the lake for two days taking pictures, the best being of the fishermen, who have a unique fishing method and an even more unusual way of propelling their boats. We traveled in sturdily built boats that resembled long war canoes. But unlike war canoes, they had motors and none of the passengers needed to paddle.
They use one long oar as a kind of a pole to pull the boat along. They do this with a hand on the top of the oar and one foot wrapped around it at water level. Meanwhile, with their other hand the manipulate a conical net, which they drop into the water on a group of fish, scoop it up and back into the boat where they dump out the fish. We watched several fishermen going about their business for about an hour, firing away all the while.
I probably took seventy-five or more shots of this activity. The lighting was good and relatively even the entire time so I rarely had to reset my camera. I feel confident this was taken, as most of them were with my camera set at 400 ISO.... F8 at a 500th of a second. (I didn't need that much speed for the fishing action, but because the boat I was on was always moving) I used my Nikon D300S with my workhorse lens (18-200mm). I had three other lenses and another camera on the trip, with me, but all of that extra weight was a waste. I was too busy to change anything. The 18-200 took all 2500 pictures I shot on the trip.
Open B: Roger Galburt 'Tuba'
I was photographing a Saint Patrick's Day parade in New Orleans when a marching band came by. I could not get a view of the whole band, so I took shots of the instruments close up. I did notice the reflection of the crowd in the tuba, and thought it was interesting. It was early afternoon and in full-sunlight when I took this shot. It was taken with a Nikon D700, with a Nikon 24-120mm VR lens at 66mm, 1/160th sec, f10, ISO200. Post-processing included cropping, sharpening, and adjusting levels.
Portrait: Masrty Becker 'Fisher Woman
I traveled to Vietnam this February during Tet, the Vietnamese New Year. We took a small boat down the Perfume River to a Buddhist temple. On the boat with us was the subject of this photograph. She had a very interesting face and smile, so I took her picture. This photograph was taken on the Perfume River in Hue, Vietnam. The woman was on a small boat and I thought she had a very interesting face and smile, so I took her picture. I was using a Nikon 300D with an 18-200mm lens at full zoom, 1/320th sec, f8, ISO400. Post-processing was fairly minimal, but I used Lightroom 4 to adjust the highlights and the contrast.
Nature: Roger Galburt 'Hawk'
This hawk landed in my yard with a squirrel he had caught. He was more interested in his meal than in me, so I was able sit and observe him from only about 20 feet away. We sat there for a long time. The hawk seemed more relaxed and confident than I was, so I was able to take this shot (and many others). It was mid-morning on a sunny day, though there was shade from nearby trees. This photo was taken with a Nikon D700, using an 80-400mm Nikon VR lens at 340mm, handheld at 1/125th sec, f5.3. Post-processing included cropping, sharpening, and adjusting levels.
