Night Photography field trip
Sunday, November 16 2008, 4:00pm - 7:30pm
Night Photography Field trip and Images Review and Critique with Lance Keimig

As a part of our Photo Education Series, Lance Keimig will give a presentation on Night Photography on Tuesday, November 11.

As an adjunct to Lance’s program, we are planning a field trip in which Lance will guide us in the art of night photography in practice. This field trip will take place on Sunday, November 16, in the area around the JFK Library at Columbia Point near U Mass
Sunset will be at 4:21 PM, so we should gather in front of the library at 4:00 PM, so we can get familiar with the area before it is too dark. See note below for driving directions.

Images Review and Critique
A meeting to review and critique the images from this field trip will be held on Wednesday, December 3 at our regular meeting place at All Saints Parish Church. Lance will lead the discussion.
As usual, set-up will be at 7:00, and the meeting will start at 7:30.
Please bring your images on flash memory cards, following the rules of Electronic Image competition (see BCC web site). If you prefer, you can email these images by Saturday Dec 2nd to Yair Egozy at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it

Registration and Fees
The fee for the Field Trip program and the Images Review and Critique will be $30. Please note that other Camera Clubs charge $100 for an identical program.
If you are interested, please RSVP to Yair Egozy at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it Please include your cell-phone number with you email registration.

Payment (by cash or a check, payable to the Boston Camera Club) is expected as we start our program at the JFK library

Driving Directions:

By public transportation:
Take the MBTA Red Line to JFK / U Mass station. If you take the T, please notify Yair Egozy at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it with your registration, so we can arrange to pick you up from the T station.
Please be there by 3:45 PM.

By car:
Take Route93. If you come from Boston, take 93 South to U-Mass JFK Library exit 15. If you come from the south, take 93 North to exit 14.
Follow Morrisey Blvd to UMass. Turn left into UMass campus, go around the school and follow the signs for the Library.
When you get there, DO NOT park in the library parking lot, you will be harassed. You should park in the parking lot for the Commonwealth Museum, which is a just short walk (100 yards) across the JFK parking lot to the entrance.

Communications during the field trip
We will maintain communication among all participants through cell phones as needed. Additional information will be sent to those registered at a later date.

Recommended equipment:
Night photography requires long exposures. Typically you will use 1-30 seconds, and for some situations 1-5 minutes exposure time.
Therefore the following items would be useful:

• Tripod – there is no way to achieve sharp images without a tripod when the exposure time is so long.

• Shutter release cable: very useful to minimize camera shake

• A flash light to help see the dials and display on the camera

• Optional – a stronger LED flash light or Off-camera flash, if you are interested in “painting with light” (I am sure Lance will cover this in his lecture)

• Also, please check your camera for a “bulb” setting, which allows for the control of the shutter release with the cable in Manual mode.

• Some cameras have Noise Reduction feature, which helps to reduce image noise created by the sensor of digital cameras during long exposures. If your camera has this feature, please make sure you know how to enable Noise Reduction.
