Composition and Lighting for Nature
Date: May 13, 2008
At its most basic a picture is a composition. It is how the elements are arranged. Composition brings order to chaos. It includes not only objects but also color, shapes, forms, textures, light and relationships. Good composition results from our ability to see a subject in its best presentation.
Inexperienced photographers tend to concentrate only on their primary subject overlooking distracting or contrasting elements. More experienced photographers tend to see all the elements of a composition and will eliminate those that detract from the main subject. Since most of us are not born “artistic”; we must learn to “see” photographically and in time it becomes second nature. Our own sense of composition ultimately becomes a signature of our style to the point that we don’t overtly think of the details when we make a photograph.
